The Wheels Come Off

So an event billed as a major announcement about the state of the Kelly Campaign in the Saint Paul mayoral race ends up being a rehash of Randy's talking points and begging voters to not hold endorsing Bush against him.

Wow.

I saw a bit of the hoo-ha on the 6 o'clock news and the scene reminded me of something:

I'm a tailfin road locomotive from the days of cheap gasoline,
And I'm for sale by the side of the road going nowhere,
A rusty old American dream.

Mysterious Kelly Announcement

The Kelly campaign has issued a statement that a major announcement about the campaign will be announced at 3:15 today. All of St. Paul's politerati are abuzz about what it might mean.

Options: 1) Go Negative (unlikely since the campaign itself is announcing and the CStPF smear campaign fell so flat);

2) Go Positive - running on the record of achievement (which is what got him into this mess);

3) Go Whacky - Announce as a Republican!!!;

4) Go Home - cease active campaigning and let the voters decide in November.

Guess we'll just have to see.

Serenity

Just left the blogger screening in Roseville (Minneapolis/St. Paul suburb) where a boisterous and mostly well-mannered crowd was really wowed by Joss Whedon's Serenity. In the dialect of the protagonist, it was a far sight better than the series. In the words of my 14 year-old son, "this movie rocks." You'll like it better if you have a passing knowledge of Firefly, but the work stands on its own. The bad guy is a real treat.

We will be going back (and soon) since my wife hasn't seen it yet (and was really disappointed that she had a conflict). There is enough quick banter and background material to warrant a second go round, but you should go the first time for the fun.

Local Level Swift Boating

With nothing positive to say about his record as Mayor, the independent attack groups on behalf of Kelly have begun in Saint Paul. The gist of the first mudballs are pretty weak. The Strib has the story on the first foray. Funny thing about their website, the "about" section has no link.

With all the excitement over the new movie, I almost forgot to mention that the DFL-endorsed candidate for Mayor of Saint Paul won big. How big, you ask? The last incumbent mayor to do about as poorly as Randy Kelly (the DINO) was in the early 1970's. If you are excited about dumping one of the most prominent Dems to endorse Bush (after Zell Miller), show Chris some love at www.chriscolemanformayor.com. Saint Paul's future will be the better for it.

Thanks to Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo (and Joss Whedon of more great sci-fi movies than bear mention here) my son and I have the chance to screen Mr. Whedon's new movie Serenity. Based on the Firefly series (that was absolutely torpedoed by the broadcast network which carried it), it tells a ripping good yarn. But I'll let the synopsis give you the details:

Joss Whedon, the Oscar® - and Emmy - nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE, ANGEL and FIREFLY, now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity. The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family –squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.
Now, having read all that, you should still go see the movie, because I expect that it will be FUN.

After all, as the poster demonstrates, there are some great teasers.
